The Fact You're Here Will Help Save Lives

Hi, my nDoug Dunbar, CBS 11 - Dallas Anchormaname is Doug, CBS 11 Dallas News Anchorman, and I hate Cancer!

I’m a husband of 22 years, a father of two, and passionate when it comes to the power of community and helping others. I’ve been blessed with an incredible family, relative good health, and a lifetime ability to help others around me.

I’ve watched first hand the ravages of blood cancers. My friend Anna is one of so many examples.

Doug and Anna

Five years ago, Anna was living a healthy lifestyle and teaching water aerobics, when she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma that turned very bad, very fast. With chemo, a feeding tube, and a sepsis infection, things went from bad to worse, physically and financially.

The picture to the right shows Anna 5 years later. She is alive today, in part because of treatments born out of research by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, funded in large part by LLS Team in Training. Anna is among our growing number of blood cancer survivors. Here today, thanks to endless research by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Research saves lives…research requires money… the math is simple.

Why I Need You, and My Promise to You

I have accepted the challenge to conquer the Ironman World Championship, October 8th, 2016, in Kona, Hawaii. It’s a grueling 2.4 mile ocean swim, 112 mile bike ride in the brutal Kona winds, and then a searing hot 26.2 mile marathon run… all on this legendary course.

I get the chance to race among the absolute best athletes on the planet, in my beloved sport. But, the true gift, will be knowing what my effort, combined with your generosity will do. As an athlete, I’ll never be worthy of this race. But when I can turn to that fellow athlete in Kona on October 8th, and tell them that my once in a lifetime shot came, through thousands and thousands in donations from people like you, who care about finding a cure, who feel a connection, who have conquered cancer, or who have lost a loved one.

Only then, might I feel worthy.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and the North Texas Chapter of Team in Training—that is where your money goes. Not a single penny to me or elsewhere.

We will make an impact. I will do all the hard work. I will share many stories during my journey to Kona. From those who are training for a race they have no choice but to win. To those facing a fear that will pale in comparison to mine.

WE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE TOGETHER!!

As you donate, please let us know if you do so in honor of someone special. I want to hear their names, see their faces, and know their stories. I can’t do this alone, and neither should they.

Until there is a cure, #konaforacure

My deepest thanks for your donation, care, support, and for sharing this link with all you can.
